How Is “April” Named in Different Languages?

The month of April is everywhere in our calendars, but its name changes from language to language. Understanding how different cultures label this spring month can be a fun way to learn more about languages and history. In many European tongues, the word for April is surprisingly similar, while others give it a completely different twist.

In English, the month is simply April, believed to come from the Latin Aprilis, connected to the verb aperire (“to open”), referring to trees and flowers opening in spring. French keeps the Latin root in avril, Spanish and Italian use abril and aprile, and even Romanian uses aprilie. Portuguese speakers call the month abril as well, showing how closely related Romance languages stay to the original Latin form.

German, Dutch, and Scandinavian languages also borrow from the same root but shape it differently: April in German, april in Dutch, April in Swedish and Norwegian, and april in Danish. These spellings are almost identical, making it easy for learners to recognize the month in several languages at once.

In some languages, the name is less obvious. For example, in Russian, the month is апрель (aprelʹ), a clear adaptation of “April,” while in Polish it’s kwiecień—a word that comes from kwiat (“flower”), celebrating the blossoming of spring. In Hungarian, the month is called április, again Latin‑based, whereas Finnish speakers say huhtikuu, which is unrelated and originally meant “burning month,” referring to the clearing of fields by fire in early spring.

In Hungarian, Hungarian uses április, which is a direct adaptation of the Latin word Aprilis, while in Finnish, the month is huhtikuu, which literally means “burning month,” referring to the traditional practice of clearing fields by burning in early spring.

Whether you are learning a language or just curious about how people around the world name the fourth month, noticing these small differences can be a delightful way to explore both vocabulary and culture.
