Everyone makes mistakes when learning a new language — and English learners are no exception. The good news? Most mistakes are very common and easy to fix once you know what to look for.
In this article, we’ll explore some of the most frequent English errors and show you simple ways to avoid them.
1. Confusing “much” and “many”
❌ I have much friends.
✅ I have many friends.
Tip: Use many with countable nouns (friends, apples, books), and much with uncountable nouns (money, water, time).
2. Forgetting the third person “-s”
❌ She go to school every day.
✅ She goes to school every day.
Tip: In the present simple tense, don’t forget to add -s or -es to the verb when the subject is he, she, or it.
3. Using “he” or “she” for objects
❌ I love my car. She is very fast.
✅ I love my car. It is very fast.
Tip: Use it for things and animals (unless you’re talking about a pet and want to say he or she personally).
4. Wrong word order in questions
❌ You are happy?
✅ Are you happy?
Tip: In most English questions, the verb comes before the subject: Are you…? / Do they…? / Can she…?
5. Overusing “very”
❌ It’s very very cold today!
✅ It’s freezing today!
Tip: Learn stronger words to sound more natural — instead of very tired, say exhausted; instead of very big, say huge.
6. Misusing prepositions
❌ I’m good in English.
✅ I’m good at English.
Tip: Prepositions can be tricky — try to learn them as part of a phrase (e.g. interested in, afraid of, married to).
7. Saying “I am agree”
❌ I am agree with you.
✅ I agree with you.
Tip: Agree is a verb, so we don’t need “am”. Just say I agree, She agrees, etc.
8. Using double negatives
❌ I don’t need no help.
✅ I don’t need any help.
Tip: In English, we usually don’t use two negatives together. Say nothing, nowhere, anyone — but not don’t + no.
How to avoid these mistakes
- Practice speaking regularly – The more you use English, the more natural it will feel.
- Listen to native speakers – Watch TV shows, listen to podcasts, or follow English-speaking YouTubers.
- Get feedback – Ask your teacher or classmate to point out your mistakes (kindly!).
- Write and review – Keep a journal or write short texts in English, then check for common errors.
Mistakes are a natural part of learning — but recognizing them is the first step to improvement. By focusing on the most common English errors, you’ll build stronger language habits and gain confidence in speaking and writing. Keep learning, keep practicing, and remember: even native speakers make mistakes sometimes!
